Cold blanket of ash
Pulled over me
I find myself in the den
And could walk right past
For however long you sleep

Yet I would still go through spider webs for you
While you would weave your own bed
To catch my feet

You know that feeling
middle of the night
Moths fly at the window
Singing in sleep
We are moonlight

Still I get caught up in spider webs with you
Running my hands on my face
Like it’s still there

We can’t help but wake up.
To the neighbors dogs.
One black. One white. All the same.
Telling us the leaves have changed.

And when the winter comes the spiders start to move
Immigrating one at a time
Illegally to our bedroom

Today we wake up in a woven silk cocoon
Stored away until the winter’s done
And the world’s brand new.

And now after all that care spiders still scare you
Now I have to force them out
Even though I don’t want to

Together, the first cold night.
Will I remember your quiet
as our days get shorter?
Soon, it will get dark before dinner
and we both must practice patience
still and tense like the breaths you take
before falling asleep
or like those coughs I hear when combing my hair
a chance to turn off the light
a chance to take our dose
I will leave the door open and the fan blowing

Now i have realized
You were that first cold night.
What kept the creatures coming
Was tucked in next to me.
In the morning, the blankets pulled away.
And you lie there half asleep.
But here I will be
Here I will be going through my routine. Waiting.
Closing the windows was no help.
Hand on the switch, I had one last thought:.
“Do our lights work today?”
